Short biography of Nikolaos Lytras:
Nikolaos Lytras - (Greek: Νικόλαος Λύτρας; Athens, 2 May 1883 – December 1927) was a Greek modernist painter known for his portraits, still lifes, and landscapes.
He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1902–1906) under his father, Nikiforos Lytras, and Georgios Jakobides. He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was influenced by Expressionism and contributed illustrations to Penelope Delta’s A Tale with No Name. Returning to Greece after serving in the Balkan Wars, he co-founded Ομάδα Τέχνη ("The Art Group") in 1917 to challenge German Academicism, gaining support from Eleftherios Venizelos.
In 1923, Lytras became director of the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he modernized its workshops. He held the position until his death from tuberculosis in 1927. A retrospective of his work was held at the Zappeion in 1929.
